Every day of the year, the City of Melbourne provides services and facilities for residents, businesses and visitors. Our activities are extensive and this section highlights some of our work during 2008–09, which contributed to meeting the objectives of Council Plan 2005–2009.

To measure progress towards our Council Plan objectives, council monitors and reports back to the community against a set of performance indicators.

The symbols used in this section identify the objectives to which the highlighted activities mainly contribute. Some areas of work contribute to more than one objective and all activities and initiatives of council are implemented within a context of financial responsibility.
The objectives and symbols are:

an innovative and vital business city
an inclusive and engaging city
an environmentally responsible city
a well managed and leading corporation
a financially responsible corporation
