Local laws

In this section:

The Local Government Act 1989 permits each local government to make 'local laws' to assist it in carrying out its functions and powers in its district.

The City of Melbourne has such local laws dealing with a wide range of community, environmental and governance issues.

Anti Slavery and Sexual Servitude Local Law 2009

The objective of this local law is to enable the Council to require information signs relating to slavery and sexual servitude:

  • to be displayed in brothels within the municipality;
  • to provide information on the serious crimes of slavery and sexual servitude; and
  • to raise awareness in the community of the serious crimes of slavery and sexual servitude.

Activities Local Law 2009

This Local Law contributes to Council's long term and responsible approach to the ongoing health, vitality, prosperity, security and welfare of the city's residents, businesses and environment.

Environment Local Law 2009

The objective of the Environment Local Law, and in particular the City of Melbourne Environment Management Plan, is to promote a safe, cleaner and more pleasant environment for all people living in, working in or visiting the City of Melbourne.

Conduct of Meetings Local Law

The purpose of Conduct of Meetings Local Law is to provide guidelines for the conduct of Council and Committee meetings, which can be amended from time to time.  It aims to encourage orderly, efficient and equitable meeting conduct, and to provide for peace, order and good government of the City of Melbourne Municipal District.
