The Victorian Government, City of Melbourne and Victoria Police are working in partnership to strengthen security across Melbourne’s central city.

The $52.5 million CBD security upgrade project includes the installation of physical protections at some of Melbourne’s busiest and most pedestrianised locations, additional CCTV cameras and a new public address system.

Security upgrades are now complete at Southbank Promenade, Southern Cross Station, Queen Victoria Market, Flinders Street Station, Princes Bridge, Bourke Street Mall, State Library of Victoria, Olympic Boulevard, Birrarung Marr and Federation Square. Speakers have also been installed in 94 locations to create a public-address system for use in emergencies.

Melbourne's CCTV network has been expanded as well, with 30 new cameras added and the existing cameras and network upgraded. To read more about CCTV cameras in the city, see City of Melbourne's Safe City cameras network.
