                    Professor Hugh R Taylor AC has won the 2013 Melbourne Award for Contribution to Community by an Individual.

                    Hugh Taylor has devoted himself to improving the health of others for over 30 years. He has contributed enormously to ophthalmic (eye) research and teaching through community healthcare programs in Australia and overseas.

                    Hugh is a tireless national and international advocate for better eye care. In Melbourne, he established the Centre for Eye Research Australia and as Managing Director has overseen its development as one of Australia’s leading eye health research institutes.

                    Hugh is a present or former chair and member of numerous national and international committees and boards including Bionic Vision Australia, Vision 2020 Australia, the Fred Hollows Foundation, the World Health Organisation, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the International Council of Ophthalmology.

                    He has been the Harold Mitchell Chair of Indigenous Eye Health at the University of Melbourne since 2008 where he was previously Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Department. Hugh’s enthusiasm and dedication to his work continues to see him push himself and others to make sure he is always contributing and making a difference.
