Parking after 6.30pm in the CBD

After 6.30pm different parking rules apply to some spaces in the central city. We’re working to make parking simpler in the central city, and installing new signs that apply to evening parking.

                    Better parking in your neighbourhood
We’re delivering our Parking and Kerbside Management Plan. That means we’re reviewing and revising the parking in all neighbourhoods across the City of Melbourne to make parking simpler and fairer. Improvements include cheaper rates for off-peak times and free parking for short stops under 15 minutes with the EasyPark app. Find out more at better parking.

                    Central city parking fee area

Map of the Melbourne CBD parking area, showing the region bordered by the following streets: Spring Street, Flinders Street, St Kilda Road, Southbank Boulevard, City Road, Clarendon Street, Siddeley Street, Spencer Street, Jeffcott Street. King Street, Batman Street, Dudley Street, William Street and Victoria Street.

Always check the signs when you park to understand what conditions apply.

Different conditions may apply to a parking space on different days of the week or times of the day.

As a driver you need to:

                    • Read the signs from top to bottom and from left to right.
                    • Make sure you find the relevant day and time for the entire period you wish to park. There are also different restrictions on public holidays. See Parking rules.

                    Central city night-time parking

If you drive to the central city after 6.30pm and want to park on the street for the rest of the night, check the signs carefully.

As we work to make parking signs simpler across the central city, you may find two different types of sign.

                    Existing sign

Parking sign with three panels showing the different restrictions at different times. The top panel says '1P meter, 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The centre panel says '2P meter, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The bottom panel says '1P, 7.30am to 6.30pm, Sunday.

The above sign shows three different conditions that apply to one parking area:

                    • From 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, you can park with a one hour time limit and you must pay a fee to park.
                    • After 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, you must pay a fee to park until 8.30pm. After 8.30pm you can park for the rest of the night.
                    • A one hour time limit applies from 7.30am to 6.30pm on Sundays.

                    We’re progressively replacing these signs.

                    New sign

                    Two hour parking meter sign

The above sign simplifies the parking conditions:

                    • You can park with a two hour time limit between 7am and 10pm on any day of the week and you must pay a fee to park. After 10pm you can park for the rest of the night.

This is one of the changes being made as we install clearer signs with new parking conditions throughout the CBD. Works to install the new signs are expected to be complete by early 2024. Learn more about what we’re doing to improve city parking.

                    Did you know?

Parking signs override the information displayed on parking meters and ticket machines.

Make sure you always read the signs carefully.

Only refer to information on a parking meter or ticket machine if the parking sign states 'meter' or 'ticket'.
