Haileluel Gebre-selassie - African Leadership Development Program has won the 2015 Melbourne Award for Contribution to Community by an Individual.

Haileluel Gebre-selassie initiated, designed and implemented the African Leadership Development Program (ALDP) which empowers migrant and refugee communities to address complex social and economic challenges in order to assist effective integration into the broader Australian culture.

The program provides an outstanding opportunity for emerging African Australian leaders to develop their leadership skills, enhance social cohesion and contribute to community development.

Having migrated from Africa and speaking very little English, Haileluel recognised that refugees and migrants from low socio economic and disadvantaged backgrounds were finding it hard to integrate in to the community. Haileluel voluntarily developed the ALDP to help provide a long term solution to this issue, while improving the lives of these grass roots refugee and migrant community members.

Having successfully sourced funding and implemented the program in conjunction with the Victorian state government for the last seven years, resulting in 220 graduates, WA and NSW have now also expressed interest in implementing the program.
