In Harmony with Health – 20 years of music therapy

                    Dr Emma O'Brien
The music therapy service commenced at Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1998 following a six-month trial by founder Dr Emma O’Brien, who still heads up the service.

The service now employs six therapists who provide over 2000 music therapy sessions at the bedside each year, improving people’s quality of life and wellbeing, and bringing joy, comfort and restoration. The service also hosts a week-long Annual Schools Live Music Festival and has 32 volunteers who provide 18 hours of live music weekly in our hospital hallways and foyers.
